The call for papers has now closed for the TTRA Europe Conference 2012 to be held in the amazing city of Bilbao from 18-20 April next. IAN HENDERSON APPOINTED TO INTERNATIONAL BOARD

Ian Henderson was appointed to the International Board of TTRA at its Annual Meeting and Conference in London , Ontario in June 2011. He follows in the footsteps of Noel Sweeney who was the first 'overseas' member of TTRA's International Board and was later to become its first true International President and Chairman. Ian is Secretary of the European Chapter of TTRA.
Another local link with TTRA comes from the appointment of Dr Sheila Flanagan of Dublin Institute of Technology as the new President of TTRA - a well earned honour.

It is co-hosted by the University of Savoie in France and the César Ritz Hotel School in Switzerland. TTRA Europe Conference - A success!

Over 120 delegates attended the rescheduled TTRA Europe Chapter Conference in Budapest from 1-3 September. This was an excellent outcome following the postponement from April due to the ash-cloud travel crisis. The theme of wellness and tourism was highly appropriate for Hungary with its excellent spa products and its developing medical tourism expertise. Congratul;ations are due to Laszlo Puckzo and his team for running such a successful event under very difficult circumstances.

Ian Henderson is presenting a paper at the TTRA Europe Conference (now 1-3 September 2010) on the subject of "Cruise Tourism & Wellness". He looks at the changing face of the industry and the challenges facing cruise lines in developing a healthy product while facing enormous pressure to fill ship and mix market segments. 2010 Europe Conference of TTRA planned for Budapest, Hungary from 21-23 April on the theme of "Health, Wellness and Tourism - healthy tourists, healthy business?" has been postponed until Sepember 2010. The Conference fell victim to the travel chaos across Europe caused by the ash from the Icelandic volcano eruption. The new data is 1-3 September and registartions remain valid.

The European Chapter conference was quite a success based in two centres
- Rotterdam and Breda at end April. Despite the economic downturn many
international delegates made the trip and heard a wide variety of presentations
and debate. TTC Managing Director and ex International Chair and President
of TTRA Noel Sweeney gave the after dinner address to delegates at Breda
with a challenging speech on the impact of the current ecconomic crisis
on European tourism. The 2010 European Conference will bi in Budapest.

The conference keynote was delivered by Francesco Frangialli, Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) who highlighted the many significant changes in both the technical role and functions of the UNWTO since the December 2003 resolution by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly making UNWTO a fully-fledged specialized agency of the UN. In particular he addressed the agency’s leadership responsibility for developing and integrating tourism statistics within the global system of social and economic statistics, and the development of TSA.

TTRA had its most successful conference when 315 delegates attended the first ever held outside North America. The conference provided an array of industry and academic speakers and a wide ranging series of plenary and break-out sessions. With the Awards Dinner in Trinity College and even a Dublin Pub Crawl the delegates were overwhelmed with both the welcome and hospitality coupled with thorough and detailed planning to ensure its success.
Next year's conference is in Las Vegas in June while the European Chapter Conference is in Nice in April.
